The Dahlias Showed Up!

The Dahlias Showed Up!

This season, the dahlias nearly broke me. I’ve never felt so much heartburn over a crop or questioned my abilities as a flower farmer quite like I did with these blooms.

We didn’t change a thing. Just like every other year, we overwintered the tubers in the ground, uncovered them around Mother’s Day, and were thrilled to see healthy green shoots popping up. They grew beautifully. We even added a few new varieties, and soon the field was full of tall, strong plants covered in buds.

And then… nothing.

No blooms. Maybe a handful here and there, but out of roughly 1,500 plants, the field was almost bare. We were stumped. Was it the weather? Was it us? We asked mentors, sales reps, even friends in the industry, but no one had an answer; just that it seemed to be an “off year” for us.

The hardest part? We had to cancel two of our most anticipated offerings: Dahlias & Desserts, and our signature dahlia bouquet. It was a tough hit, both emotionally and financially.

But here’s the wild twist: with just a few weeks left in the season, the dahlias have finally decided to show up—in full force. Maybe it’s the cooler nights, maybe it’s all the extra care, but the fields are suddenly bursting with color, and it feels like the flowers have been saving their best for last.

So, if you’ve been waiting for dahlias now’s the time. Mack is tucking them into every bouquet leaving the farm, and our pick-your-own cups are overflowing with them. They’re worth the visit, and we’d love for you to come enjoy this long-awaited moment with us, so snag a bouquet or plan a trip out to the farm you won't want to miss dahlia season!

XOXO, Jess
