Descanso Heirloom Chrysanthemum: A Spider Mum With History
This heirloom spider mum is instantly recognizable: long, curling petals in warm bronze and sunset tones, blooms so large and dramatic you can’t help but notice them, and stems sturdy enough to hold their own in a centerpiece or a show ring. But what really makes Descanso special isn’t just how it looks-it’s the story it carries, even if parts of that story are a little mysterious.
A Glimpse of Descanso
Descanso was introduced by breeder Ted King and named for the National Chrysanthemum Society’s 64th annual show at Descanso Gardens in Southern California. That tells us right away that Descanso was bred to impress at exhibitions. It’s a spider mum, known for its long, curling petals whose blooms, when disbudded, are large and show-worthy. We’ve grown hundreds of varieties of mums here on the farm, and we can tell you that not every mum grows this tall, this strong, or this stunning.
Why Spider Mums Are Special
Spider mums have a history all their own. They were bred during the golden age of chrysanthemum exhibitions, when growers obsessed over petal form, color depth, and flower presence.
They’re a little wild, a little dramatic, and completely unforgettable. In a garden or bouquet, spider mums like Descanso bring movement and life, especially when paired with softer textures or complementary colors. Spider mums are totally unusual, and certainly turn the heads of folks who aren’t used to seeing this form of flower.
The Mystery and the Mission
Here’s the truth: heirloom mums like Descanso often come with gaps in their history. Exact breeding dates, parentage, and lineages can be difficult to pin down. Much of what we know lives in old notebooks, garden club newsletters, or the memories of growers who tended them decades ago.
That’s why The Mum Project exists.
Our mission is to document these incredible heirloom varieties before they fade from memory. We’ve trialed them across the U.S., collected photos and essays from growers, and recorded growing data so that we can try to share everything that we’ve learned. Heirloom mums deserve more than just a place in a catalog; they deserve to be remembered. And so do the growers who loved them first.
