Frogs to Friends : How I met TJ McGrath

Some friendships are written in the stars — others are forged over a bowl of floral frogs and a shared love of farm-fresh beauty.

I first met TJ McGrath at a Slow Flowers member meetup back in September a few years back, and we instantly clicked. We were elbow-deep in design work, geeking out over frogs (the floral kind, not the amphibians), and it was clear from the start: we were going to be floral besties.

From that moment on, our friendship blossomed — pun fully intended.

Over the years, we've collaborated on multiple events, cheered each other on through personal and professional highs and lows, and kept the laughs going across social media. Supporting each other hasn’t just been fun, it’s been inspiring. There’s something really special about having a creative partner who gets it and who shows up with genuine heart, talent, and humility.

One of my favorite memories is when TJ came to Harmony Harvest Farm a few years back to design for the American Grown Field to Vase Dinner we hosted. That whole experience was pure magic — and not just because of the florals. We also held a hands-on workshop for a group of eager designers, and the energy in the barn that day was electric. Watching TJ teach, guide, and create with such grace and generosity was a reminder of how rare it is to meet someone who leads with both passion and kindness.

That event was a spark — and we’ve been dreaming ever since of creating something of our own.

Now, that dream has become reality. This August, we’re beyond thrilled to welcome TJ back to the farm for a full-day workshop — one that’s truly the brainchild of years of friendship, laughter, and a shared mission to uplift the farmer-florist relationship.

What makes TJ so remarkable isn’t just his refined design eye or his signature "more with less" approach (though that alone is worth the ticket). It’s the way his whole presence feels like a breath of fresh air. He’s a pure soul — gentle, deeply kind, and intentional in every way. And that sincerity radiates through his work. His designs speak without shouting. They move you with their grace.

This workshop isn’t just about mechanics or ingredients — it’s about mindset. It’s about connection. And it's about making the most of the flowers (and people) right in front of you.

Whether you’ve known TJ for years or are just getting introduced, I promise: you’re going to love him. We sure do.

We can’t wait to welcome him back to Harmony Harvest Farm — as our dear friend, and as the creative force that he is.
