Flowers Definitely Help My Mental Health
Jessica Hall
For the ten days that led up to Valentine’s Day, we were operating somewhere between joyful chaos and floral bootcamp. Stems everywhere. Perpetually damp sleeves. Endless bunches of tulips. And a little bit of adrenaline to keep the wheels turning. Providing local flowers to our community is both meaningful and exhausting, but obviously, we wouldn’t have it any other way.

But now, it's quiet! And with all the orders out the door and a flower-less cooler, I get to walk back into my own kitchen, which I realize I haven’t actually stood still in for more than thirty seconds at a time. That’s usually when I refill my own vase- not for a customer or an IG photo, or anything else “official”. Just for me. Leftover stems from colors that didn’t sell. Nothing styled or strategic. Just flowers existing in my house like normal house guests who don’t eat snacks or ask for WiFi.

I’ve always had to keep an eye on my mental health, especially in winter. This is something that I’ve been writing more and more about lately, mostly quietly and privately. Last year, we did a Flower Therapy series here on the farm so we flower people could all band together and get through the desolate winter together. But this year, it seems that sharing my experience in words is more my speed. The days are short, we’re inside more, and everything feels a little suckier. And I know a lot of you are carrying your own version of that right now. And I want to be clear about something. Flowers won’t fix your brain chemistry. I wish they did, because I’d be rich and sleeping better. But they do help in small ways.
Having something living in the house gives me something gentle to look at. It adds color to a gray week. It gives me a moment to pause when everything feels loud. It didn’t solve anything. I am still tired, and there was still work waiting. But it helped me feel a little more steady.
So if winter feels long for you too, you’re not alone. And if bringing flowers into your home gives you even a small lift, that’s exactly why we grow them! They’re not just for holidays or big events, but for the ordinary weeks when you need something cheerful in your life.
I’ll be refilling my own vase right alongside you.
P.S. This is NOT an affiliate link, I just really miss the smell of flowers in the dead of winter, and this perfume always pulls me through it, plus I get *a ton* of compliments every time I wear it. 10/10 recommend that you splurge on it, too.
XOXO, Jess
