Everything We Know About Mellow Moon Heirloom Chrysanthemum

We’ve been growing Mellow Moon for many, many seasons now, and what grabs us first every year is her color. At first glance, she looks white, but look closer, and you’ll notice yellow, buttery undertones that marry her beautifully in arrangements and gardens with other traditional fall shades. Her stems grow to about 18 inches, which makes her perfect for cut flowers or border gardens. While she thrives in our production tunnels, we also think she’d do beautifully in containers.

What sets Mellow Moon apart from other white chrysanthemums we grow is how her color reacts to cold. Many white mums will blush pink when temperatures drop, and while we don’t know exactly why, it’s extremely common. Mellow Moon doesn’t follow that pattern, though, and that’s no accident.

A Modern Cultivar with an Intentional History

Here’s where it gets a little confusing: Mellow Moon isn’t technically an heirloom. But that didn’t stop her from joining our collection. She was specifically bred to withstand northern, colder climates, with traits that keep her color stable even in chilly weather, which is exactly what makes her so reliable in our fall fields.

In 1983, the University of Minnesota released Mellow Moon as part of their cold-hardy chrysanthemum breeding program. This program was built on decades of research starting in the mid-20th century, aimed at creating mums that could thrive in northern climates.

Mellow Moon was bred from French Vanilla × Minnesota selection 75‑70‑55, specifically for decorative use in cold climates. While most heirlooms are defined as varieties that have been around for 50+ years, Mellow Moon is younger, and while she may have had plant patent protections back in the day, any such protections would have expired by now.

In practice, Mellow Moon shares many heirloom-like traits: longevity, reliability, and a very attractive form. That’s why she fits perfectly in our Mum Project goals: documenting the history and performance of the chrysanthemums we love, whether they’re decades-old heirlooms or thoughtfully bred modern cultivars.

The Blooms

Mellow Moon produces 4.5-5”, cream-colored, semi-incurved, fully double flowers that stay creamy even in cold weather. The stocky, sturdy, stiff-stemmed plants are densely covered with rich green foliage, and they bloom reliably in the first half of September in northern climates. Plants grow 15-18” tall and 20-22” wide, unusually compact for a large-flowered cultivar, making her perfect for both field planting and cut flower use.

Why Mellow Moon Matters to Us.

Even though she isn’t technically an heirloom, Mellow Moon has earned a spot in our fields and our hearts. Her color reliability and sturdy stems make her a production essential for us. More importantly, she’s part of a living history, and a story we’re actively documenting through The Mum Project.

We’re recording everything from bloom timing and color stability to plant habit and hardiness, because keeping these varieties documented ensures that future growers can enjoy them as much as we do. Mellow Moon might be a modern cultivar, but she still has a story worth telling!
